GP38-2B
My GP38-2B was built out of an Atlas GP38-2 from their Trainman series. Smooth running, quiet, and fairly easy to work on. DCC equipped with a DH165KO decoder, so it runs nice and is speed matched to the GP40-2's 3062. These three are the start of my "Kettle Turn" units. I am planning on modeling something that looks like the string of locomotives that get sent out of Spokane on the Kettle Turn local. More on that on another page.
The modifications to this unit were pretty simple. The cab and cab sub-base were removed, the holes in the walkway patched, a new Cannon high-nose kit and styrene roof and walls grafted on. A set of handrails bent up for the long handrails, and a load of paint, decals, and programming later, the unit ended up as you see it here.
In reality, BN 2601 is a GP38, not a -2 unit, but the Atlas unit was available at a good price, so I used it instead. I actually picked up a couple of the units, built this one and one other, which I built for a fellow River City Modelers club member. It turned out even nicer than this one!
Another couple of upgrades I may do is to install Cannon fans, since the unit still has the cast on fans, and get M.U. hoses and pin lifters installed, decorate the front end a little bit more. That'll be a future project...a long time in the future!
